How come he don't come and P.I.P with me
Down at the meter no more?
How come he turned off the T.V.?
And hanged the sign on the door?
Well we call and we call, "How come?' we say
Hey, what could make a boy behave this-a-way, yeah?
And he learned all of the lines, now, and every time
He's gonna s-s-s-stutter when he talks
And it's true, it's true? He sure has acquired this kinda cool and inspired sorta jazz
when he walks
Where's his Pioneer jacket and blue jeans
If this ain't healthy, its some kinda clean
As Rickie Lee Jones once sang, Chuck E's in Love with his expatriate Pioneer buddies. It was reported on OrthoSpineNews that Chuck Reynold's also known as "Cat o' Nine Lives" landed his dream position as VP of Sales with Spine Smith and Ceiling Technologies. It's kind of funny that OSN only reports hirees that they place, but what can one expect from an executive search firm? Interestingly in the preceding blog post, someone commented that the problem with spine is that there is no continuity when it comes to employment. They marveled that five years was considered a lifetime. Well look at Chuck.......Bristol Meyers, Synthes, Osteotech, Surgical Dynamics, Globus, Lanx, Pioneer and now Spine Smith all in a fifteen to twenty year career. What does that tell you about management in this industry? As for Chuck, it's game on. He will have to leverage all those consultancies that he and his Lanx friends initiated to walk the walk and talk the talk, because if he can't pull his markers this time, he will walk the plank like most in this industry do when they can't deliver those unrealistic expectations. As for an "innovative product portfolio" you've got to be kidding. SS's has major gaps in its portfolio.
TSB wants to know, will Chuck E be loved, or, will he eventually walk the plank?
Is anybody else fed up with trying to truly sell and do our jobs in the OR, yet surgeons completely take that end of the business for granted? I think at this point, most suregons have forgotten the years of hard work and committement that goes on behind the scenes to ensure, in part, their cases go extremely well. Instead, they focus on the "newest guy's" consulting promises and want to know what you can do to combat their advances. When you do, they continue to use that as a way to leverage additional situations. If you don't, you discover they have their hands in many baskets. The future is scary......
ReplyDeleteIt's even scarier that Chuck is the VP of Sales at Spinesmith
ReplyDeleteR.I.P.
ReplyDeleteWith betting in full form w/ Super Bowl XLV just around the corner, the Vegas "prop" bet has his tenure at:
OV 17 1/2 months +185
UN 17 1/2 months -115
Those odds are telling you something folks,,
I wonder how much business Chuck told the dupes at SpineSmith "he could bring on immediately", as he did at Lanx. I can't recall the ex-Globus Consultants he brought on board, but it wasn't many....
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of spine smith all I see is the hot blonde at NASS in the spandex. I will buy 3.
ReplyDeleteYa think sex sells goober?
ReplyDeleteI thought this same blogg said Spine Smith is all POD and POD is bad? If so, Is Chuck still a good guy?
ReplyDeleteSpine Smith. What a company or companies. VCD Medical, VCD International, Orthopedic Sales and Service, all Dunworth Companies that carry consulting companies. Whatever Rick was told and he told them, both are deceiving each other. Ole Kev thought he was big time when he was the DePuy Spine Distributor, Blackstone Distributor, U.S.Spine Distributor, all at the same time by the way. Now he is Mr. Theken/Intergra among the Encore rubble. Spine Smith is nothing more than a company of whores and Kevin is the biggest one.
ReplyDeleteOne thing is for sure, don't become notable in this business. It seems you are better off being one of the herd. If you stick out and make any kind of name for yourself, you are sure to be judged with out a trial on this blog. It would be nice to see a positive story about someone every once and a while. Even though TSB did not openly slam Reynolds his innuendos and set up for the rest of us makes him directly responsible for the onslaught that follows.
ReplyDelete6:18
ReplyDeleteDid you read the previous post? It's obvious TSB sets the bar a bit higher than we do. As for Chuck his track record speaks for itself, no need to say anymore. Spinesmith is going nowhere RIP
Are there any other talented people out there? Give us a break, its the same old retreads spewing the same old bullshit that the same old people buy into over and over and over again. Tell 'em a story and they love you, tell 'em the truth and they think you are a pariah.
ReplyDeleteCan someone explain how SpineSmith does business? Is it a POD - someone said something about surgeons buying shares? I've never heard of these guys, but want to keep my eyes open.
ReplyDeleteSuprisingly enough (not really considering his cynicism, disdain and skirt chasing her-assment suits) the very own Spine Blogger has Chuck beat with closer to 10 companies within a comparable time. In fact, maybe the better question is who has been fired more times. My bet is on MM/TSB/Nieradka - just another Talking Head on the Road to Nowhere...TSB (Truth Sucks Blogger)
ReplyDeleteHey I know JN and he has only worked for six companies in twenty five years, I can guarantee you that Chuck has him beat by a mile.
ReplyDeleteLeave TSB out of this cat fight girls, he's just doing his job which is desperately needed in an industry made up of con artists and ponzi schemes.
ReplyDeleteI have a question for those in the know regarding medical device sales and representation. Will a facility (hospital) allow a person with a felony drug conviction into the premises to sell and / or cover a medical device product / case? Does this create a situation for additional liability?
ReplyDelete6:49
ReplyDeleteNot sure on the answer to your actual question,, but I would ask, with that background, will the individual in question even be able to pass the corporate background check(s) on their way to a job offer?
Depending what type of felony you committed. I would seek some legal counsel before I even attempt to find a job in this industry, but then on second thought there are a few people in this industry that should be charged with a felony.
ReplyDeletein Las Vegas the answer to that question is an absolutely ! why not?
ReplyDeleteYou now have another felony. Highjacking. First degree.
ReplyDeleteI judge a sales person by how many quarters they deliver the number! Im not sure but I think Chuck delivered the number for his territory at Lanx for 34 out of the 35 months he was there!
ReplyDeleteAnyone know why Chuck suddenly left Lanx? Lanx does!!
Many of us have changed positions and companies multiple times in the past 10-15 years, thats the nature of this industry! Does that make us bad people!
Change positions? This industry is a revolving door. Why? Because of greed and envy. Because there are many unrealistic small company CEO's that believe they are still at Stryker, DePuy, etc.... How many of these small companies will be around within the next year or two remains to be seen. As for consultancies and POD's, it will be the death of us, whether you believe it or not. Now why would I want to use whatever it is that Spinesmith sells leaves much to the imagination.
ReplyDeleteThe real problem with spine as it relates to employment is that there are a lot of individuals in senior level management positions that got there through their buddy connections but in reality lack the required experience and have absolutely no clue how to lead or run a company. I worked with Chuck Reynolds in the past and I witnessed firsthand that he is a great leader. Yes, Chuck has changed companies a few times over the years but always brings with him a clear vision and strong discipline which has enabled him to take several of these companies from zero dollars in sales to several million dollars in sales almost overnight. Could this be why SpineSmith decided to hire Chuck to be their VP of Sales? Plus, SpineSmith can rest assured that Chuck will manage and grow their business by adhering to moral and ethical principles. And as the song goes, "And whatever is that he got up his sleeve" I'm sure it's going to be record sales results that Chuck has consistently delivered over the years. The real leaders stand tall while the rest of the wannabes just sit around gossiping.
ReplyDeleteHow does one bring several million dollars in sakes overnight with product evaluation committees and capped pricing? Overnight? I would think there's a little consulting deal in it for everyone
ReplyDelete12:06
ReplyDeleteOk Chuck quit pimping yourself!
... and 10:12, please quit referring to yourself in the third person.
ReplyDeleteAnyone remind of the Jimmy character from Seinfeld?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 12:06. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING!!!!! Do you really believe the bullshit you just spewed. Moral and ethical? Compared to who, the Lyons Brothers? Craig? Lanx? Your bar for moral and ethical is subterranean. . Moral and Ethical.... This is what is wrong with the spine business, that you think that he is moral or ethical, who are you? Paul Sendro? Bob Hastings?
ReplyDeleteThe spinal business has become a joke!! On a VP level I have seen so much movement that most companies don't care. You can fail at one company but get hired at another without any explanation. If you are regional manager and have had changes, even if they are not in your control (Downsizing, bankruptcy, etc) they say you are a job hopper. The rules change once you are a VP of Sale. This business is made up of a bunch of cousin marrying whores. If anyone buys into the belief someone can bring a book of business I must question that person’s intellect. The recruiters are even worse. What a lost art and shame on what the spine business has become.
ReplyDelete@3:23 Good call...
ReplyDeleteJimmy says right on!!
ReplyDeleteChuck chuck chuck...the man the myth the legend...if only i could be so well loved...He and that Zimmer guy Kip were great buddies....figures.
ReplyDeleteMangement focus on growth... then they split your territory, give half to a new idiot that does not know shit about spine, then my income is halved, then the new guy's territory starts diving, then my old surgeons phone me asking me how they could have employed this idiot, then I leave to a new company, move 80% of my business to the new company, then I am sales rep of they year, then my manager splits my territory, and employ a new idiot. Then my surgeons don't like him, then I leave, cause my income was halved again.... and THAT my fellow readers, is how you work at 5 companies in 10 years. To maintain your income and lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteTo be continued........
ReplyDeleteThen you get hired by a wannabe CEO of an early growth stage company that can't deliver any new products, misses his timelines, wants you to increase sales with one product by pulling a rabbit out of his ass, and then terminates people to cover his ass, holding you accountable for his failures
..........and the seasons they go round and round, and the painted ponies go up and down we're captive on the carousel of time
How many of these stories doer hear on a daily basis, that's why good people get bounced around, do we need to hear anymore?
ReplyDelete2:44 why don't you go work for a solid distributor? What state are you in?
ReplyDeleteI worked for Chuck for a year at lanx as a regional mgr. He is focused and driven with little sentiment. He is old school management- lives by MBO's. Calls everything as he sees it- even to those in power that he shouldn't. That has always been his demise.
ReplyDeleteWorking for him was like boot camp- many parts of it you hate, but you know in the end it is what needed to be done. He produces results the old fashion way- planning and exicuting the plan with accountability.
He would reward excellence and punish anything less. He was strongly loyal to his people and would fight for them, even when it was not convienent.
When he finds the right home he will flourish. Can't figure why he is not at Stryker Spine...
I like Chuck. So there!
I don't know Chuck from Adam, but I definitely agree with Jan 27 2:44AM about why there is so much rep turnover. It's a bottom line industry. Nobody is looking out for you but you.
ReplyDeleteI'm all for having support, but most "suits" (managers/VP's) direct from a high level. They only care about Quota and growth, and forget what type of hard work in the trenches that it takes to earn and grow business and be successful in this crazy and competitive industry. My past 2 managers have never been a rep, so they lack OR savvy and end up doing more harm than good with my surgeons.
2:44/54 AM - Probably once worked at Vertiflex Spine!
ReplyDeleteWhat is the latest on Bob Hastings? Now that should be a topic of discussion.
ReplyDeleteWhatever your opinion of Bob is/was he is at heart a good guy- he recently has had some personal issues health wise and is hopefully recovering. i seriously wonder if he will ever resurface in the spine arena again.
ReplyDeleteBob had a severe stroke late last year in his brain stem.
ReplyDeleteHe is unable to do much of anything.
His wife is divoricing him... and his mistresses are nowhere to be found either.
Bullshit and bullying may get you money... better choose the right.
Bob Hastings the man, the legend. What can one say? If there ever was an honorary fourth amigo it was Big Bob. He was better know as "tee'em up" Bob. One has to feel sorry for anyone dealt such a debilitating blow or you would not have a soul. But glib and superficial, manipulative and conning, pathological liar, lack of shame or guilt, lack of empathy, poor behavioral control, I guess that summarizes what a good guy he was. Just because Bob threw plenty of people under the bus that's why he never looked in the rear view mirror.
ReplyDeleteIf I may state the obvious:
ReplyDeleteChuck, Chuck, bo, buck
Bananafana fo f...
Sounds like TSB has a bit of penial envy for OSN, why else do this to a guy unless he actually has met Chuck, which I have know for a long time?
ReplyDeleteMM you seem like a jilted douch!
1:44, It's ironic that you mention "blow" in your post concerning Hastings. Any truth to the rumor that "blow and x" caused his stroke?
ReplyDelete3:32 Where is TSBs post throwing this dillweed under the bus? BTW before you comment, try spell check it helps you penile envious douche LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
ReplyDeleteSounds like Chuck's fan club from either Lanx or Pioneer need to pull their tampon out its creating discomfort.
ReplyDelete@ 5:03 -confirmed, sadly is so...
ReplyDeleteChuck congrads on the job thought you would end up at Lifespine. Rumor is that you are giving them a doctor who will use the new ISP Device in exchange hiring your son?
ReplyDeleteI've got blisters on my sisters
ReplyDelete@12:28-very sad. From what I understand 2 or 3 kids at home (or what used to be his home). At his age and weight, unforgiveable to be so selfish.
ReplyDeleteWe've all had run ins with Bob but I hope he gets his life back so he can make right what he did wrong to his wife, family, friends, and business associates.
@12:28 The good Lord put him on his back so the only way he can look is up... I hope he uses it to his advantage.
ReplyDeleteChuck is one of the biggest weasels I've ever worked with in this business. He is like Eddie Haskell, he appears to be a good guy, but at his core he is a back-stabbing, lowly snake. Sorry Chuck... but that's the truth so live with it.
ReplyDeleteA famous man once said "It takes 20 years to build a reputation, and one second to ruin it." You have spent over twenty years ruining yours..."
This is a quick note just to say that it's easy to find faults and not as easy to praise individual accomplishments. It is my position and the that of many others that Chuck Reynolds is the real deal and quite capable of creating a positive and productive sales effort for Spine Smith. Chuck is a doer and maximizes sales results through hard work, industry knowledge and ability. My hat's off to Chuck and Spine Smith and the marriage will be mutually rewarding.
ReplyDeleteJust like he brokered a doc in the Baltimore area for Life Spine that was using the Aspen in exchange for a job for his son. He's the real deal, a legend in his own mind.
ReplyDeleteJust a quick response to this subject.... I have know Chuck Reynolds for many years and my experience has been positive. His sales and sales management abilities have created multiple pathways for many people (both Corporate and Field Sales) to benefit. Hopefully some of the prior comments aren't a result of other people's actions (or their own).
ReplyDeleteYada Yada Yada Yada Yada Yada Yada Yada Yada The Man the Legend lives on
ReplyDeleteIts funny that all of you negative people are sitting on your unemployed asses complaining about what shoulda, coulda happened to your career. Maybe you should try getting up off your asses and get a job like MY FATHER, "CHUCKIE REYNOLDS" did instead of sitting on this dumb ass blog whining about how pathetic your lives are. business is business. :)
ReplyDeleteWeren't you yourself unemployed
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, you must not know that chuck has more then one child.. and I am not the one your referring to!
ReplyDeleteWho calls their dad chuckie
ReplyDeleteDamn LS owner did your forget your Prozac today? I know your terrets is bad and the voices in your head never go away. Listen to them if I copy a product I will make money, can you hear them. It is alright chances are that you can always plead insanity when the DOJ and FDA come a callin
ReplyDeleteI have worked with Chuck Reynolds. He is a good and honest man.
ReplyDeleteAnyone will say ANYTHING when they are ANONYMOUS....grow some
ReplyDeleteIf you said you worked with Chuck Reynolds and he is a good and honest man, you are a toal fool.
ReplyDeleteHe is not only disnonest and a bad person in gerneral. Chuck only knows bullshit and anyone who takes him on as a V.P. of anything is bringing Chuck's past and it stinks worse than buulshit. Hey Chuckey, if your reading this you are also a pussy and coward and the next time I see you we will finish our last conversation but face to face.
spell check idiot i heard you had a thing with chuchie. is he soft to spoon with?
ReplyDeleteChuck Reynolds is one of the biggest pieces of shit I ever worked with. After a lifetime in the business he has NO doctors that will "go with him" and he does not know jack shit about anything surgical or medical. All he does know is what ass to lick in order to get that next overpaid job.
ReplyDeleteCan't really fault him for that but one would think that eventually ones real abilities would become known.
As you will see in my post below from 3/25/14, you and I are on the exact same page.
DeleteSo I have to ask how old are you all and how pathetic can you all be sitting on your asses hiding behind a computer without stating who you actually are! If your going to call someone out grow a pair of balls and state who your actually are! Your all SO pathetic that you feel good about yourselves to sit here and speak such horrible words about someone! I seriously wish you all a very MERRY Christmas. Keep talking the talk, you sure as hell can't walk the walk! Obviously you have alot going on in your life to sit on your ass and write these comments, hows your job doing? To end this, remember your negative and degrading comments only reflect your true self, and KARMA is a bitch! Jealousy, it is SO not flattering! I will say a prayer for your children that they never have to no the horrible person you actually are! - Paige Reynolds BSN
ReplyDeletepage reynolds, bsn must stand for bullshit nurse.
ReplyDeletecan't chucky talk for him self and have his wile stand up to all the shit that is all true. i do not have any respect for any nurse and less so for the ones that plug in bs behinde their name. you or chuck know less about the medical field than your basic patient.
speak for your self chuk or do you need your wife to hold your dick for you?
Hey ^^^^ Anonymous POS....what's your name? You got balls enough to run your trash mouth all over this blogger but let's see if they're big enough to leave your name you spineless, out of work, hack POS! Hahaha I'll bet anything you don't....
ReplyDeleteI knew Chuck way back in his early Zimmer days- the late 1980's. His team mates considered him wormy and slithery, and he did not produce any meaningful sales growth. He focused on areas of the business that were easy for him, things that he could sell on the spot or with minimal effort. So we saw him doing a fair number of Aspen Generator evaluations, and he was always looking for pad and pencil business. The problem was, all the money was in Total Joints and that I recall, Chuck never converted a single surgeon to anything implantable. Too long a sales process.
ReplyDeleteChuck did spend a lot of time though figuring out how to slot himself for promotions. He decided to become a "Field Marketing Specialist" and somehow, within less than a year, he was promoted to a leadership role with the Marketing Specialists reporting to him. Our team thought it was laughable- he didn't have a stick of talent and never showed any aptitude for anything other than calculating how to climb the ladder. And shame on Zimmer- Chuck talked all the corporate talk but was never held accountable for performance. No one in the field respected him- he simply was not a performer. Make no mistake about this- Chuck's "skills" were purely aspirational, not financial and he never did any "heavy lifting" that any of us ever saw.
After he left his Zimmer sales territory, another guy came in behind him and grew the territory like 40% the first year. Can't remember the guy's name anymore. Needless to say, news about the new guy belting it out in Chuck's old territory got to Chuck and from what I understand, Chuck was none too happy about it. Made him look really bad. Still, enough guys liked him in Warsaw, for whatever their reason, so he continued to grow with Zimmer.
Later on, maybe in the early 1990's when Rich Adrian was still running the show at Zimmer New York, Chuck slithered back to ask Rich for support to become a Zimmer Distributor when an opening arose. Rich told him, no way, you don't have any* skills around Total Joints. According to Rich, Chuck responded that he "could make up for that because I have management skill." OMG, we all rolled when we heard that story.
I respect that for a guy who back then was nothin' but smoke and mirrors, he seems to have found A LOT of people to hire him. But given the lack of substance in his Zimmer days, I doubt much has changed.
A couple of females with the last name of Reynolds have chimed in to this thread. Are any of you his wife (or ex wife?) with the spending problems? :-)
