Last night TSB received an e-mail from a hiring recruiter regarding job opportunities for sales professionals at a specific company. The message stated, "As you know Company X is hiring sales professionals, therefore, is it possible to place a message regarding our job opportunities." A pretty innocent request by any standard, considering that TSB has offered our platform as a way to advertise jobs. TSB even went out of the way to give this company a reluctant plug. Much to our surprise, the head of HR fired off a letter this morning requesting that we delete this immediately since we did not have their permission to post this. What was stated was that this "company was uncomfortable with the post," and, TSB published it without their permission. So, we must ask the question, why was the e-mail sent? In addition, there was never a mention of blind post? So what's the big deal? Are you looking for sales people or not?
TSB must suspect that the backlash from our readers must have made the HR director weak in the knees, along with the management team at this company. God forbid we post on TSB, ooooh, it must be the boogeyman. But this reaction brings us to a much bigger question. Do any of these companies or managers ever look at our readers response as constructive criticism, or, does everyone have an axe to grind? I mean everyone cannot have an axe to grind. To paraphrase the Dali Lama, "it takes less energy to be nice, than it does to be a prick." Hopefully, the people and investors at this company will learn a valuable lesson of how they are perceived within the industry. By the way, if you're looking for a sales opportunity, just e-mail us at spineblogger@me.com and we will pass it on to a credible search firm.
Peace, Love and Understanding!
TSB
TSB this is a perfect example of how Lanx is run as a company and the management itself, a sea of constant change one well thought out idea does not work after another. The company just demonstrated why they are the joke of this industry........and they had so much potential!
ReplyDeleteI wish that you could put back up the response so that we all could get a great laugh! Any way that I can access that?
It was just not a "hiring recruiter"..it was someone from within the company as the domain name in her email address was that of the company. They just did not expect the vitrolic backlash which happened..pretty funny when one thinks about it. Must of shocked the hell out of the HR dept..likely all new themselves. Blog on MM
ReplyDeleteVery few of the readers' comments on this site (or any other forum) are "constructive criticism." "Constructive criticism" implies a certain level of objective impartiality. Rather, it's 90% axe grinding -- presumably by former employees (who are probably "former" for a reason) or people who perpetuate drunken rants they overheard at NASS. Let's face it: sales reps/managers tend to dislike/distrust just about every company in the industry. Case-in-point, review virtually every other post regarding any Spine company on this site or cafepharma and count the negative comments and then the positive comments. You'll come to one of two conclusions: (1) nearly every company in Spine is, in fact, evil or (2) Spine reps/managers are generally a disgruntled bunch (at least the ones that tend to post comments on blogs/forums). So, to say that a handful of axe-grinders is representative of the industry is partly correct -- but it's more of a reflection on the disgruntled reps/managers than the companies. But it's also myopic to assume that disgruntled axe-grinders are representative of the entire industry.
ReplyDeleteIt has been posted on numerous occasions on this blog site. This is a very thin-skinned industry. It's okay for management to establish great expectations and then blame everyone else for their inabilities to forecast and execute in a timely manner. When the CEO of an early growth stage company forecasts the launch of products and his R&D department misses each and every timeline who gets blamed? Sales? Never have met a CEO or President who was fired for blowing dead monkeys. You know the expression, you cannot make Beef Wellington out of bullshit. Maybe that's why people become former employees, because they voice their opinions of others inadequacies. The only recourse is to get rid of them, and then some of you wonder why some people have an axe to grind. Maybe the axe should be used on some of these people. Grind on.
ReplyDeleteCannot deny the fact that the avg tenures of ALL their VP's and RSM's is less than 12 months. Either everyone they hire are idiots..or the ones doing the hiring are at fault. No axe grinding, just facts
ReplyDelete@3:20 & 4:20- perfect commentery.
ReplyDelete3.20, with objective impartiality one can observe that there is no other field in surgical medicine with so many 'start-up' companies as spine. Why is that? That is because the back problems that cause patients to seek medical attention are for the most part still poorly understood. A big central disc herniation is clear, but discogenic pain? Facet pain? Pain caused by hypermobility?? Without understanding the disease mechanisms, everyone is free to fantasize about having found the solution. The plethora of me too products though show that there are not that many solutions for these (un)known problems. The common thread though is that they are invasive and expensive, and, measured by the number of unsatisfied patients and re-ops, not very effective. All these 'start-ups' are all fighting for the same patient, and at times use less savory methods. This, at least to me, explains why the industry as a whole has a bad rap, and why it at least in part deserves it.
ReplyDeleteTSB,
ReplyDeleteI find it a bit humorous that you try to pass along these job postings as if you offer an objective service. This is not a job board, legitimate news site, or anything of the kind. Simply a forum for sometimes entertaining gossip. Nothing more.
"Hopefully, the people and investors at this company will learn a valuable lesson of how they are perceived within the industry." Hopefully you will learn this same lesson.
6:48, Give it a rest and get over yourself. TSB is one of the best spine industry sites on the web & yes some of it is gossip but there are a number of postings and commentary that I and others enjoy. I will visit TSB on a daily basis but can't say the same for Orthoworld, Ryortho, SpineMarket or others
ReplyDeleteI am down with the Dukester. Much of what initally appears to be scandalous gossip or ax grinding, is in reality accurate information being put forth by those with first hand experience.
ReplyDeletecan you find the comments on google cache or something?
ReplyDeleteIs LD, the new VP at said company, the real deal? Will he lead the sales of this company out of the grey dust cloud that seems to continue to follow them? It seems from multiple opinions here on TSB and others, that TB was and is not the answer as VP and that has been recognized in form of his relegation to a lower position. Is this attrition at the mid and upper management levels an attempt by the company to become a real player by weeding out the unqualified, or is it a sign of frustration from the personnel due to them taking marching orders from a relatively unexperienced spine industry executive layer that is too proud to relinquish some control and listen to spine industry veterans.
ReplyDeleteSales is the key of course. Why can't they attract real talent and why do they have to go to TSB to advertise? Are more rookie reps the answer to try and take the market by storm with a unique product, or are fewer, yet better trained and tenured reps the answer? Who over time can develop real business. Does the company have the time? Direct sales team or hybrid sales force using some distributors? Or is it too late and are they doomed to become yet another medium sized company treading in quick sand? Do their plans to topple over $100 mil come true? Or does it equate to meager growth while continuing to rely on the one product that got them there? Multiple other companies are said to launch similar products mid to late summer. Do they have a plan and how will they react once there is a lot more competition out there for this device?
If you honestly look at companies that focus their hiring with internal versus external recruiters, turnover is what you get. There is a reason that the best companies use external recruiters. You get what you pay for.
ReplyDeleteNow there is a real objective commentary, probably from a recruiter like the DeAngelis Group sounds like "money for nothing and chicks for free."
ReplyDeleteMM, am I incorrect? It was an internal recruiter that asked for the posting. No offense, but do postings get passive or active candidates? Not to stereotype, but job postings (low hanging fruit) do not tend to attract top talent. That is why recruiters continue to exist even after the invention of Monster & LinkedIn.
ReplyDeleteIt is amusing to continue mentioning "objective" when there is not likely an objective posting on here. TSB would not be entertaining if it was objective.
10:41 I can assure you that the new senior VP of Sales and Marketing (LD) is not the answer and is as bad or worst than the VP that he replaced (TB). LD was being forced out at MSD and Lanx is just taking on someone who proved time after time that he is not capable of getting things done......he is a retread and TB is the most dishonest individual and that is how he has built his career.....just ask is son?
ReplyDeleteThey will fail terrbily this year and it will become very clear that the constant change in management and direction will keep this company in the minor leagues forever. They lack ethics loyalty and a commitment to the quality people that they DID have. It is only the people like LD that will find a home at Lanx, people whos careers are washed up and have proven to be a complete failure.
STAY AWAY FROM LANX PLAIN AND SIMPLE!
If Lanx is basing it's bright future on the likes of Lance, a person who was demoted three times over the last years at MSD, and proved to be a complete failure and will prove to be even worse than Tim, which is really hard to do with the bar that guy set, then they will be lucky to grow at all from 09.
ReplyDeleteThey continue to lie and cheat reps, agents and managers, why is the tenure of any self respecting person at Lanx less than 12 months?
The CEO is a complete turd, the other founder would rather go jogging than have anything to do with this disaster he has realized and the only thing that they will attract are the likes of people like Lance or someone with no experience in the industry.
Trust me when I say they will not go public, sales will go backwards this year and they will be the laughing stock by years end just like Lance was when he departed MSD.
Is this the same Lance that is violating his non-compete with MSD? Just check his emails for proof. Are you listening MSD??? Not sure you care!
ReplyDeleteNo it's the Lance that said on a conference call that he contacted a couple of surgeons in Indy after he left MSD that were Lanx users.....they can't be the same Lance can they???
ReplyDeleteJust to set the record straight. The self-serving recruiter comment wasn't anyone from The De Angelis Group. As we tell our clients, if you can do it without us, great! If not, we're here to help. There simply are no statistics to support May 21,10:49's comment. Just keeping it real...
ReplyDeleteConsidering the pain you have caused others in the process of your career making yourself rich, I applaud individuals who choose to be rude and ugly towards you. For the greater glory of you beats a path straight to HELL. I rest assured you enjoyed your trip immensely. I am consoled that eternity will hold torturous pain and sadness for you.
ReplyDeletewtf?
ReplyDeleteMichael De Mane resurfaces!!!! What a great thing for LANX!
ReplyDeleteFor June 4 - 1:02pm - What are you talking about? You may want to check into rehab, dude! Seems like your drinking..way too early.
