Nuvasive - Where's Vanilla Ice When You Need Him?

The last two days have been terrible for the biggest and baddest cheetah in the jungle.  The hunter has become the hunted. The predator has become the victim.  Even the performance that Vanilla Ice had last night has not provided NuVa with a respite.  Who knows maybe he can save the company by coming in a leveraging more money against NuVa's balance sheet, take out his management fees, and then sell off the company?  Maybe David Paul may be interested, he has been dubbed the new king of the jungle, hasn't he?  Looks like NuVasive is going down faster than Marilyn Chambers ever did. Alex's sphincter must be pretty tight considering that he is starting to run out of excuses.  POD's affecting his top line?  Come on, that's another excuse, big boy.  Maybe he can blame Obama for the current environment that we are all learning to adapt to.  You know what Axl Rose use to say;

Welcome to the Jungle we've got fun and games, we've got everything you want Alex we know all the names, We are the people that can find whatever you may need , If you got the money honey we got your disease. Can anyone spell SHORT?

What are they doing that is so different to make them stand out as the industry example?
I am eager to learn how to to be so successful.

The payments will be made and distributed to the members. This sounds like Alphatec is trying to find a legal way to pay these surgeons to use their products. Any surgeon that is not a member and using Alphatec may be putting money in the pockets of Phygen surgeons. I am sure that will go over well.

  16. After lowering its top-line forecast for the third quarter by only 4.5 percent Wednesday, orthopedic device manufacturer NuVasive (NASDAQ:NUVA) lost a third of its market value. Shares in the company fell 33 percent to $15.22, the greatest decline in company history.

Sales were hurt by competitor discounts, increased delays, and denials of coverage by insurers, said the device maker. Spinal fusion devices, which account for 60 percent of the company’s revenue, were hit hardest. Furthermore, the company saw 14 sales representatives depart since July, lured to competitors by higher salaries.

“We experienced an unexpected sequential decline in the third quarter due to unusually high account churn related primarily to the growth of surgeon participation in physician-owned distributorships and to increasingly aggressive competitive tactics,” said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alex Lukianov.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Cry us a river Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  17. for NuVasive this was bound to happen. Alex and Co. have been using inventory magic to make their margins look better for a while now. As well, cutting the vast majority of Surgeon consultants did not go over very well. Most of the Pay to Play guys found other homes willing to give up the dough (Lanx/Styker/Globus/ETC). You can not point the finger at one particular thing, but the list is long.

The market has changed Alex, you are not the all powerful oracle. It may be time to either step down or put some people in place that actually WORK in the current market.
The Product Mangers. Who are these people? Glorified Mini Sales people? When it takes this long to come out with a good percutaneous system, you have a BIG problem. One of the reasons Globus does so well, is the fact they have the highest number of engineers in the business, perhaps only second to Medtronic. When your marketing people have no clue on other systems i.e. if someone has directional stimulation, it is time to make a change! Here is an idea, get rid of the marketing/product people and hire engineers. They bring much more to the table than your current team.
RVP/AVP/ETC.. Who are these guys? Speaking to a "friend" who works for NuVasive, these guys do zero to impact business. Most are glorified accountants and pie chart managers. Please send some more of those emails about what PTQ (What Sales Representative does not know what their PTQ is at?) is and what kind of prize we get! I enjoy reading those while the NuVa rep shakes his head. When your RVP/AVP/ETC. has not visited a territory that he CONTROLS for 2+ years, it is time to find a new guy! Pull up their travel from their assistants, if they have not even visited their respected territories, send them packing. By the way, how do these guys need assistants?
Costs. It is way to easy to beat NuVasive on cost, it is comical. Most Surgeons are now hospital employed. Most hospitals can steer the Surgeons on product choices based on cost. Perhaps bring down the costs of your disposables or make alternative non disposable equipment and boom, your back in the game.
Game Changers. Come up with real game changers. I know, easier said then done, but come on MAS TLIF? MAS PLIF? Just reading those brochures makes me laugh. Come up with a REAL solution to neuro monitoring, that makes it quantifiable safer and your in the game! More than your "Hunting Algorithm".

So in short: Get rid of your AVP/RVP/ETC. Find candidates that are selling in the market today. Get rid of your marketing/product managers, instead hire engineers that actually bring something to the table. Drive costs down on implants and disposables. Come up with real game changers. Put your jock strap on, this market is aggressive! IF your using that as an excuse for not making your number, your truly behind. At the point the top is fixed, you can start looking at the players on the street.

One thing they do well on is the company surgeon labs. Keep your money in those activities. The XLIF team that travels the country seems to pretty good too.

  31. The XLIF is a good option for a small number of patients. But the majority of cases will be L5-s1 and the XLIF doesn't work out that low. Nuva has an awesome expandable corpectomy system but is still lacking. They need a good PEEK zero profile cervical option. They also need to slim down their MIS TLIF rectractor to stay competitive with second gen big boy designs like Depuys Viper. Their bag is getting a little shallow. Also, several hospitals want nothing to do with their sega genesis Neuromonitoring system.

    ReplyDelete

    1. NuVasive has an awesome "PEEK zero profile cervical option". It's called Interlock. NuVasive also has a great option for L5-S1; ALIF!! It also has some really great TLIF options. What are you selling for L5-S1 that isn't ALIF or TLIF? Oh you're selling an interspinous process plate with allograft? Yup, NuVasive has that too, and they had it long before you did.

      Delete
    2. Does it take 20 trays like all your other products? NuVasive systems are bloated and inefficient. I love listening to hospitals bitching about the 25 trays they bring in for an XLIF. That business model will bankrupt the company.

      Delete
    3. What does Nuvasive have that is great for L5-S1 ALIF? Clearly not their standalone. That thing is a POS.

      Delete
    4. I did an XLIF the other day with four trays. You're an idiot. Supplemental fixation may require 4 more. MAS TLIF for L5-S1 is the best mini-TLIF system on the market hands down. DBR is unmatched for posterior fixation on a one level. L5-S1 device is comparable to any other and instrumentation is essentially flawless. You hate these products because they make you consistently lose market share.

The Company also announced the resignation of Jeff Rydin, President of Global Sales, which will be fully effective March 31, 2013. All U.S. sales responsibilities will be assumed by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alex Lukianov and all international sales responsibilities will be assumed by Russell Powers, who is newly promoted to Executive Vice President of International.
Alex Lukianov, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, "Jeff has been an important member of the senior executive team and we are all supporting him in his decision to transition from the Company. His hard work and dedication throughout the years to build our global sales force will continue to pay dividends as we move forward. I am excited that Jeff has agreed to a long-term consulting position and will continue to work with members of the executive team for several years."
Jeff Rydin, President of Global Sales, said, "My decision to leave NuVasive was very difficult. NuVasive has become and always will be my family. I have been contemplating this for months and discussing my departure with my family and Alex. In the end, this decision is best for me and my family. I am extremely grateful to Alex and the entire management team for supporting me during this process. Moreover, I am excited to execute a smooth transition and continue contributing for years to come as a consultant to the company. I thank the entire NuVasive family for building a company that is by far the best in spine. NuVasive has truly changed spine surgery through innovation, speed, great service and a very special culture that is alive and well. And last but not least, a special thank you to our Global Sales force."
Mr. Lukianov added, "We will immediately begin a search for Jeff's replacement and in the interim, I will leverage my many years of experience executing sales strategies and leading sales forces like I did during my time at Medtronic Sofamor Danek as Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing and then later as President of U.S.A. While there for six years, I built the sales force and grew MSD to the #1 market share position through a culture focused on innovation and responsiveness. My added interim direct reports are two Senior Vice Presidents of US Sales (West and East) and Senior Vice President of Sales Operations. I am also extremely pleased that Russell Powers will be stepping in to lead our international growth efforts as our Executive Vice President of International reporting directly to me. For the last two years, Russell has been focused on both the product marketing, development, and operations areas of our business. He is now ready to leverage his years of experience while at Medtronic Sofamor Danek. During his tenure there, he held many leadership roles including Vice President of International Spinal and Biologics where his responsibilities included international sales, marketing and development, as well as global operations. Russell is very experienced and well-versed in all international markets with a strong history of prior successes."

  63. Rydin leaving will have zero affect on the company's ability to continue to innovate and provide solid minimally disruptive solutions. If Alex, a former XLIF patient, self starter and passionate CEO wants to work harder in the interim in order to turn around the market's ill conceived perception then there is nothing wrong with that. Its a bold and smart move and speaks volumes about what he believes in. The comments on this blog are large in part from reps who have lost market share over and over again to NuVasive as well as disgruntled managers who have been passed over for positions with Nuva. This market is undergoing a correction. Nuva is the pinnacle of innovation in this league and innovation gets stifled during corrections. Once this correction passes, Mitt is in the White House, and Obamacare is squashed the Cheetah will rise again sipping a purple kool aid bourbon with a smirk of sweet victory. Onward and upward!

  64. Yes, the XLIF was innovative but now there are several companies with very good lateral options and it is debatable which one is the best. XLIF may still be the leader but the gap is closing quickly.

Alex has lost the credibility of the Street. The analysts are mocking his excuses of the sudden appearance of POD's and the aggressive tactics of competitors. As much as I dislike Globus, they have replaced NUVA as the sexy new spine company. The best thing for NUVA is for the board to come to its senses and kick Alex out. At that point, they may be an attractive acquisition target.

    1. Globus sexy? What is sexy about a copycat solution? What is sexy about hiring family members of surgeons to distribute products. The company, the culture, the leadership stinks of greed and unethical business. There is nothing sexy about Globus with the exception of a short position. The company will not continue to thrive. Going public was the only thing that company could do to hold on. XLIF and the clinical support it represents will always make it the leader. There is no other procedure where this can be more true. If you kick Alex out you will lose the passion and culture of NuVasive. The company will fall and there will be nothing left. Huge mistake. POD's have affected all of us especially in the west. There are also numerous examples in the east where this has happened. To say that it is not in the thorn of any legitimate company's side who refuses to go down that path is just turning your head. That is the even bigger problem.

    2. Is Nuvasive trying to say that they don't hire Surgeons family members??? They had Dr. Huttsman's bother-in-law as their distributor in Utah for years! C'mon..who are you guys trying to kid?

  65. 10:12- POD's just showed up in the last few months? Are you serious? When you buy your business, guess what happens when a higher bidder shows up?

You said that NUVA will fail if Alex gets kicked out. Who, in their right mind, would invest in/ acquire a company like that? House of cards...

    1. Where does 10:12 say the POD's just showed up in the last few months?

  66. NUVA's 'Dear Leader' said it. Here is a quote from the analyst call:

Chairman and CEO Alex Lukianov commented on the warning, "We experienced an unexpected sequential decline in the third quarter due to unusually high account churn related primarily to the growth of surgeon participation in physician-owned distributionships and to increasingly aggressive competitive tactics.

And he probably said it with a straight face. Smart investors were not fooled and quickly dumped the stock.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He said it increased. Not that it just showed up in the last few months. You're a fool. Distorting words for personal gain is inappropriate. Market makers sell on news good or bad, that is what they do. They dumped the stock and will buy it back again as NuVa reports continued market gains. Brokers get paid on the sell and buy.

  67. 7:02 (Alex)- Nice try at defending the lies. Globus and Lanx are using your playbook and kicking your butt. Fact is they both have better lateral solutions- ask Cappucino. Red light/ green light isn't going to save you. POS circling the bowl.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That just won't get through. Maybe this will:
NUVA: Sales ~$600M, Market Cap $640M
GMED: Sales ~$400M, Market Cap $1.56B

      Delete
    2. So we should ask someone who is a paid consultant to give us his opinion on who has a better lateral? Let me ask you this...what lateral school did he attend? XLIF University? Exactly. Why recruit Cappucino? Because he went to XLIF school? Because he needed money? Ask the reps of those companies why they are scared to death to cover these cases. Because they are not trained. One trained surgeon does not make you an expert on this procedure. Copying is the highest form of flattery...nuff said.

  68. Nuva sales $600 million. Profit under $10 million and they carry debt of $150 million

Gmed sales $400 million Profit around $30 million and Zero debt.

You do the math and see why the street likes Gmed more.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm in the OR, not on the street. Its a veil and behind GMED is a copycat solution that pays their users. Soon the ball will drop and the street will be left holding it, not management...I would be very careful.

  70. how many surgeon consultants can Globus have? How can they have surgeons designing product after product, how can they keep paying all these surgeons to "trial" and give their opinions on their products, it seems all they do is get surgeons on board by paying them. it seems sooner or later they would get investigated, Of course i have been saying that for years now. they do not play fair and its too bad all the companies dont have the ability to "pay" their surgeons the way globus does...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good question. My best guess would be that the rumors of them paying everyone are probably exaggerated. I mean they've got some different stuff that seems sexy. I doubt they're really paying as many surgeons as we all accuse. No doubt they've got a lot of design team surgeons, but we all have a tendency to exaggerate and make excuses as to why we don't have somebody's business.

  71. Nuva did a good job introducing lateral. Problem for them is that you can't patent an approach, just like TLIF, ALIF, et al. There is nothing special or proprietary about them except for their weird fascination with the color purple and the cult-like culture based on their worship of the russian Buddha. Globus, Lanx and the IP lawsuits are killing them.

I guess Rydin wasn't the stud I though he was. Maybe I should have realized that anyone that hires a barnyard, pork-bellied, wine-o like Terry Rich has to have his judgement questioned.
